Softball hosts No. 5 Florida on Wednesday
The JU softball team faces its biggest test of the year, just six days into the season, as the Dolphins host No. 5 Florida for a single game at the JU Softball Complex on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The first 100 fans will get a free JU t-shirt, while the Dolphins (2-2) will hold a postgame autograph session following the contest.
“I’m looking forward to a great softball atmosphere on Wednesday,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “Florida is one of the elite teams in college softball right now and will provide a good challenge for us in this early part of the schedule. I know our kids are ready for the challenge.”
The Dolphins come into contest after splitting their first four games at the JU Tournament over the weekend. They secured wins against Buffalo (3-1) and Bethune-Cookman (5-0) before falling to No. 25 North Carolina (2-1) and Kansas (6-1).
Junior outfielder Kayla Ouellet paced the JU offense after batting .385 (5-13) with three doubles and two RBI. In the circle, junior Sarah Sigrest didn’t allow an earned run in 8.1 innings, including fanning three batters in 1.1 scoreless frames against the Jayhawks.
The Gators (5-0) won all five of their games to open the season at the USF Wilson DeMarini Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. They outscored their opposition, 53-to-3, with the help of 14 home runs.
Kelsey Bruder and Cheyenne Coyle each have 10 RBI and three home runs to pace the squad. Aja Paculba and Michelle Moultrie both have nine hits through five starts.
Stephanie Brombacher struck out 19 batters and scattered four hits in 14 scoreless innings of work to lead the Gator pitchers, while Hannah Rogers fanned 14 batters en route to earning a pair of wins.
Last season, Florida got two home runs from Tiffany DeFelice to pick up a 6-1 win over the Dolphins in Gainesville, Fla. The Gators won all eight contests against JU in the all-time series.
