Softball competes at Strike Out Cancer Tournament starting Friday
The JU softball team will hit the road for the first time this season starting Friday at the Strike Out Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla.

The Dolphins (8-4), who will play 16 of the next 18 contests on the road, open the tournament against UCONN at 4 p.m. before playing the host Owls at 8 p.m. On Saturday, they play Maryland (11 a.m.) and Pittsburgh (4 p.m.), while closing the tournament on Sunday with a seeding game.

“This tournament is a great challenge for us,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “We are playing four great teams who will give our squad a test each time out. Our performance at our tournament last weekend has gotten us a little ready for what lies ahead.”

Last weekend, the Dolphins won the first four games of the JU Invitational before eventually falling to Jacksonville State on the final day. They followed it up with a doubleheader sweep over South Dakota State, 9-0 (6) & 4-3 (8), on Tuesday night.

Junior Kayla Ouellet is back in the team lead in hitting with a .366 average (15-41), including a 3-for-4 effort and an RBI in the game two win against South Dakota State. Despite a low batting average, senior Katie Kelly is pacing the Dolphins with 10 RBI and two home runs.

In the circle, sophomore Olivia Kline combined to pitch seven scoreless innings to secure both wins against South Dakota State for a staff-best 5-1 mark. She also has a team-high 31 strikeouts, while junior Sarah Sigrest boats a 1.06 ERA.

In the all-time series against opponents this weekend, the Dolphins have lost all eight matchups against the Owls, while losing their only meeting to the Huskies and Panthers. It will be the first meeting between the Dolphins and Terrapins on Saturday.
