Softball competes at USF Under Armour Tourney on Friday
The JU softball team will get real familiar with the fields at the Eddie C. Moore Complex as they compete in the first of two weekends in Clearwater, Fla. on Friday with the USF Under Armour Tournament.
The Dolphins (9-8) open the tournament with St. Joseph’s on Friday at 12:30 p.m. before finishing the day with Maine in the next game. On Saturday, they open the day again at 12:30 p.m. with Radford and face Villanova at 5:30 p.m. JU closes the tournament against Toledo on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
“We are excited to play this weekend,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “Last weekend, we did play consistent throughout the games and that really hurt us. Our team has had a great week of practice so I know our focus will better for this tournament.”
After sweeping South Dakota State on Feb. 22, the Dolphins had a rough first road weekend in Boca Raton, Fla. at the Strike Out Cancer Tournament. JU opened with a 10-0 win over UCONN before dropping the next four games, including three by less than 10 runs.
Junior Kayla Ouellet paced the JU offense last week with a .400 average, four RBI and two doubles. She recorded three hits against South Dakota and UCONN, including a two-RBI double in the win against the Huskies on Feb 25.
Junior Amanda Schmidt finished with seven hits and four RBI, while sophomore Olivia Kline got shut out wins in the circle in game one against South Dakota State and in the victory against UCONN.
Against the field, the Dolphins have a 1-1 record against St. Joseph’s after taking an 8-3 loss last season in Clearwater, Fla. JU swept Toledo in a doubleheader at the JU Softball Complex in 2010, while winning the only meeting against Maine in 2008 and Villanova in 2006. It will be the first matchup all-time between JU and Maine.
