The JU softball team has completed finals for the year and has nothing but games to focus on for the rest of the season, starting with Wednesday against Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla. at 4 p.m.

The Dolphins (35-14, 14-2 A-Sun) will play the Wildcats in a single game for the only action of the week to prep for the final two home doubleheaders against UNF (May 4) and Stetson (May 6).

“We are ready to get going again,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “Since finals just got done, we have to ease back into a playing mind set. We five tough contests to close out the year, but I know our kids are ready for the challenge.”

The Dolphins return to action after sweeping FGCU, 8-0 (5) & 5-2, on April 18 at the JU Softball Complex.

The Dolphins used eight runs on 11 hits in the first game before having senior Katie Kelly, junior Brittany Eppley and junior Amanda Schmidt each homered in game two to tie the program record for wins with the 2005 squad.

Junior Sarah Sigrest earned both wins in the circle after allowing just one hit and striking out seven in the first game, while surrendering one run on four Eagles’ hits and three strikeouts during 5.1 relief frames in the night cap.

Schmidt and Kelly led the JU offense by driving in three runs each. Sophomore Olivia Kline and junior Kayla Ouellet both added two hits in the first game.

JU has won 17 of its last 19 contests to gain a two-game lead in A-Sun play with four contests left to play.

The Wildcats (22-22) come into the week after a 10-day break, but are riding a six-game winning streak. The Wildcats blanked UCF, 5-0, and secured a three-game sweep over North Carolina Central in their latest games.

Earlier in the season, the Dolphins recorded a 5-0 victory against Bethune-Cookman to close out the first day of the JU Tournament on Feb. 11.

Kline scattered two hits and struck out five batters for the complete-game shutout, while junior Brittany Eppley went 2-for-3 with a home run to help pace the offense. With the victory, JU now owns a 6-0 advantage in the all-times series.
