Sarah Sigrest nets third A-Sun “Pitcher of the Week” honors
Junior Sarah Sigrest was named A-Sun “Pitcher of the Week” after four dominating performances last week to help the JU softball team secure its first conference regular season title.
Sigrest struck out 23 batters and held opponents to a .071 batting average in 18 shutout innings for a 3-0 record. She threw a near no-hitter against UNF after allowing just a hit and fanning four in five innings to get the game one win. Sigrest added two more scoreless frames in the night cap to help JU secure its first A-Sun regular season title.
Against Stetson, Sigrest earned both wins in the circle by striking out 17 batters in 11 innings. She struck out eight and allowed two hits in five innings of game one. In game two, she came into the contest in the third inning and got the first batter to fly out before fanning the next five batters looking. She finished with nine strikeouts and allowed a hit in six relief innings to secure the sweep.
“I am excited for Sarah,” said JU head coach Amanda Lehotak. “She remained strong all conference season and never let up all year. I’m looking forward to watching her in the conference tourney.”
Since her loss at Lipscomb on April 8, Sigrest had posted a perfect 9-0 mark and a 0.39 ERA, while striking out 62 batters in 54 innings of work. She held opponents to a .118 average, including fanning five or more batters six times during 10 appearances.
The Daphne, Ala. native finished the season with career bests in wins (23), strikeouts (185) and ERA (1.01), while only allowing one earned run in her final 25.1 innings of work.
This is Sigrest’s third weekly honor this season after earning the accolades on March 7th and 21st.
The No. 1 seed Dolphins start the A-Sun Tournament on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C. against the winner of the Campbell/Mercer matchup.
