JU 2-0 after day one of the Opening Weekend Tournament

The JU Dolphins softball team followed up their win earlier in the day with a dominating 10-3 performance against the UNCG Spartans.

Jacksonville used a seven run second inning to break open the game and never looked back.  Leadoff hitter Kayla Ouellet led the Dolphins with three hits and three runs scored while second and third hitters Karson Tuck and Amanda Schimdt each had a pair of hits and RBI’s.

Senior Brittany Eppley got the start on the mound and performed well earning the win (1-0) after going four and a third innings and giving up five hits and three unearned runs.

“Brittany Eppley really set the tone early,” said head coach Ali Higgs.  “She forced a lot of groundballs and our defense made the plays behind her.”

The Dolphins started off their big second inning by stringing together three consecutive hits followed by a walk.  In just that inning alone, they had six hits, which along with two Spartan errors allowed JU to score seven runs.

“Our hitters had some great at bats with timely hits and had a huge second inning,” said Higgs.

UNCG used a two out rally in the bottom of the third inning capitalizing on three Dolphin errors to add three runs of their own.

Spartan short stop Aisha Figueroa was the only UNCG hitter that had any success against the JU pitchers going three for four.  No one else had more than one hit.

Figueroa’s final hit of the night broke up a dominate streak that Sarah Sigrest had going.  Sigrest came on in relief in the fifth and struck out every batter she faced, seven in a row, until Figueroa was able to hit a bloop single over Schmidt’s head with two outs in the seventh.  Sigrest then got Alcala Tatiana to fly out to left to end the game and secure the victory for the Dolphins.

The win moves the Dolphins to 2-0 on the season.  They return to action on Saturday when they face St. Louis at 4:15 pm followed by Virginia Tech at 6:30 pm.
