Dolphins down Knights in dramatic fashion
Sarah Simon hit her third home run in four games to help the JU Dolphins defeat UCF 3-2 on Friday in Orlando. The Dolphins improved to 5-7 on the season after winning for the second time in their last three games.
Senior Sarah Sigrest (3-3) pitched the complete game for the Dolphins going seven innings giving up nine hits and two runs with only one of those being earned. She added four strikeouts bringing her season total to 50.
UCF was able to strike first when they broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. The leadoff batter of the inning reached on an error and was able to score after a pair of groundouts.
The game stayed at 1-0 until the top of the fifth when Simon blasted a two run homer over the centerfield wall. Left fielder Jacey Warner had singled to get on base and scored on Simon’s shot.
The Knights were able to tie the game at 2 all in the bottom of the sixth. Sigrest quickly retired the first two batters of the inning, but hit the third batter putting a runner on first. Catcher Alena Murgatroyd then doubled to left center to bring in the runner and even the score.
The tie would not last long as the Dolphins were able to score the go ahead run in the top of the seventh. Senior leadoff hitter Kayla Ouellet started the inning off with a walk. She able to advance to third after two fielder’s choices and then scored the game winning run on a wild pitch.
UCF would not go down without a fight as they loaded the bases in the seventh with only one out. After a groundout to start the inning, the Knights were able to get three runners on base after two singles and an error. First baseman Marissa Mendez then sent a pitch out to left field. Warner caught the ball and then fired it home on a rope to Simon who tagged the would-be tying run to end the game in dramatic fashion.
The Dolphins will look to build on the exciting victory when they return to action Saturday in Orlando at 11:00 am to face JU assistant coach Laura Taylor’s alma mater Seton Hall. JU will also take on Eastern Michigan Saturday at 4:00 pm.
