Schmidt blasts Dolphins past Tulsa
Senior third baseman Amanda Schmidt hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning on Monday against Tulsa to give the Dolphins the 1-0 victory. JU has now won six straight games and eight out of its last nine.
Dolphin ace Sarah Sigrest (10-3) had another outstanding effort pitching a shutout and extending her consecutive scoreless innings streak to 34. She limited the Golden Hurricane batters to just three hits over seven innings while striking out seven.
Tulsa had a strong outing from their starter Kalynn Schrock who shut down the Dolphin batters all day until the she made a mistake in the sixth inning. She limited the JU offense to just five hits over the course of six innings.
The Dolphins had a great scoring chance in the bottom of the third to break the scoreless tie. JU had the bases loaded with two outs but could not produce any runs as Schmidt popped up to the short stop.
Tulsa looked to have something brewing in the top of the sixth inning when leadoff hitter Caitlin Everett singled up the middle to start the inning. Everett, who had been 18 for 18 on the season in stolen base attempts, took off for second but was thrown out by Dolphin catcher Sarah Simon. Sigrest then retired the next two Tulsa batters to end the inning.
Schmidt was set to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning for the Dolphins and was looking for redemption after failing to come through at the plate earlier. She did just that as Schrock left a pitch out over the plate that Schmidt turned on and sent over the left field wall for her second home run in as many games and giving JU the lead.
Tulsa had a chance in the seventh after Skylar Swanson started the inning off with a walk after a lengthy at bat. Sigrest settled back in and got the next three batters to strike out, fly out, and ground out securing the win for the Dolphins.
With wins in its last six games, JU moves to 14-9 on the
season and will put its winning streak on the line when it hosts FIU for a
double header on Wednesday scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. The Dolphins lost to FIU 3-1 back on February
19th in Miami.
