Dolphins to finish regular season on the road

The Jacksonville University softball team (29-22, 9-7 A-Sun) will complete its regular season this Thursday when it travels to Deland, Fl. to take on the Stetson Hatters (23-19, 8-8 A-Sun) for a doubleheader.  With a win, the Dolphins would clinch a berth in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.

The two games could go a long way in deciding who makes it to the conference tournament.  Currently Jacksonville sits in fifth place in the conference with a 9-7 record.  The Hatters are one place behind in sixth with an 8-8 record.  The top six teams make it in, but with four spots still up for grabs and six teams battling, every game is critical.

After having a week off for finals, the Dolphins will look to return to the diamond and replicate the pitching performances they had their last time out.  In a doubleheader against Georgia Southern, senior Sarah Sigrest struck out 12 batters en route to throwing her first career no-hitter.  Dale Townsend followed up that gem with one of her own allowing just two hits and one run over seven innings.  Despite Townsend’s efforts, the Dolphins fell in the second game 1-0.

The Hatters come into the matchup having been defeated by UCF their last time out 8-1.  Jacksonville played the Knights twice earlier in the season splitting a pair of highly contested games.  The last time the Dolphins and Hatters played, JU swept the doubleheader winning the first game 8-0, followed by a 2-1 in extra innings back on May 6, 2011 in Jacksonville.  Stetson leads the all-time series 17-5.
