Dolphins clinch Atlantic Sun Tournament berth
By winning their tenth conference game this season, the Jacksonville University softball team has secured their spot in the six team conference tournament that begins next week. The Dolphins split the final pair of regular season games with Stetson Thursday night in Deland, Fl. The Hatters were victorious in the first game 1-0, while Jacksonville took the second game 3-0.
Senior Brittany Eppley (10-8) continued her conference dominance pitching a one hit gem to earn the win in the second game. She struck out nine batters while only walking one over the seven innings of work.
Neither team had much success at the plate in either game. In the first game both teams had just five hits. The second game had even less as the teams combined for just six hits.
JU could not get the timely hit they needed in the first game as they stranded nine runners. Right fielder Codi Kelly was the only Dolphin that had any success at plate as she was responsible for three of the five JU hits.
Sarah Sigrest (17-11) allowed just five hits in six innings of work, but picked up the loss. She made just one mistake but it turned out to be the difference in the game. Stetson’s pitcher Meredith Owen helped herself out by taking Sigrest deep for a solo shot for the only run by either team.
The struggles continued for JU at the plate in the second game up until the seventh inning.
Karson Tuck broke the scoreless tie by leading off the seventh with a shot over the centerfield wall for her fourth home run of the season. The Dolphins were not done there as Melissa Morales hit a ball off the fence for a double scoring two more runs for JU.
Jacksonville (30-23, 10-8 A-Sun) will now look to defend their conference tournament title. The Dolphins will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina where games begin on Wednesday of next week.
