JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville ended its JU Tournament run on Sunday with a 1-0 shutout over ACC member North Carolina by putting up a double-play in the bottom of the seventh, squashing the Tar Heel’s last-effort at scoring. Jacksonville won 2-for-2 on the weekend against North Carolina, improving to 5-4 on the season.
Numerous Dolphins made impactful plays on the field and at-bat, especially in the top of the second. Lexie Ballard opened with a single to shortstop and Victoria Brown followed two batters later with a single to right to advance Ballard to third. In the next at-bat with two outs on the line, Codi Kelly recorded an RBI single to right field that scored Ballard for the only run of the game.
Brown led offensively, finishing 2-for-2 with two walks, while Kelly went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Brown, a sophomore, (3-1) was also a stunner in the circle, striking out two, walking two and allowing just three hits to earn her third win in the 7.0 inning stint. Against North Carolina’s Lori Spingola (2-3) and Lauren Batten, Jacksonville tallied nine hits, one earned run and two walks.
In the final half inning, North Carolina (2-5) wore its rally caps, but fell short. With one out, Jenna Kelly doubled to deep left center and Erin Satterfield came in to pinch run. Lauren Walker then pinch hit for Elena Covert, but struck into a double-play where third-baseman Cecile Gomez threw to Emily Sanchez at first for the final two outs.
Jacksonville finished the JU Tournament 2-for-4, beating North Carolina 3-1 and 1-0, while losing to No. 25 Louisville 5-0 and Notre Dame 9-1 (5).
Next, the Fins will travel to Gainesville on Wednesday for a rescheduled single-game at No. 2 Florida.
