Softball Travels to No. 1 Florida, Hosts Tourney this Weekend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball will travel to Gainesville on Wednesday for a single-game against No. 1 Florida. The contest, beginning at 6:05 p.m., was originally scheduled for Feb. 12 but postponed due to inclement weather.

Jacksonville (5-4) is coming off of a two-win, two-loss split at this past weekend’s JU Tournament, where the Fins took out North Carolina twice, while falling to No. 25 Louisville and Notre Dame.

Senior Codi Kelly leads Jacksonville offensively, hitting .393 (11-for-28) with three runs. Sophomore Victoria Brown stands second at .333 (8-for-24) with five runs, while junior Jackie DiPiazza is third at .278 (5-for-18) with four runs.

Brown leads in the circle with a 0.88 ERA and a 3-1 record. She split this past weekend, losing in the opener to Louisville before winning in the closer against North Carolina.

The No. 1 team in the country according to the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 poll, the Florida Gators sit a perfect 11-0 after tournament sweeps during the past two weekends.

From Feb. 6-9, the Gators took out USF, Illinois State, Wisconsin, Michigan and Bethune-Cookman at the USF Wilson-DeMarini Tournament, including an overtime win and a shutout. Then this past weekend at the Easton Desert Classic in Las Vegas, N.V. the Gators beat Seattle, Hawaii, Ohio State, Cal State Northridge and Minnesota, outscoring their opponents 59-6.

In the series record, Florida has won all 11 contests against Jacksonville, including an 11-3 win last season at the JU Softball Complex.

After Jacksonville’s mid-week meeting against Florida, the Fins will host their second-straight tournament, the JU Wingate by Wyndham Tournament Feb. 21-23. Southern Illinois, Savannah State, University of Illinois-Chicago, Bethune-Cookman and Mount St. Mary’s will all visit the JU Softball Complex this weekend.
