FIU Sweeps Softball in Non-Conference Double-Header

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Non-conference FIU broke Jacksonville University softball’s three-game win streak on Wednesday evening, defeating the Dolphins 1-0 in the first game and 8-3 in the second.

Jacksonville falls to 11-12 overall.

In game one, sophomore pitcher Victoria Brown didn’t allow FIU to score a run until the top of the fifth inning when Nicole Rascon’s RBI single to right field scored Bre Kaye from third.

The only run of the first game, FIU tallied the winning score on five hits, while Jacksonville finished 0-for-4. Emily Sanchez led at the plate, going 2-for-3 while both Brown and Codi Kelly finished 1-for-2.

On the mound, Brown (5-6) allowed one run (one earned) on five hits in the complete 7.0 inning game. She both struck out and walked two batters. FIU’s Corinne Jenkins (9-2) allowed four hits and two walks in 5.0 innings, while Shelby Graves fanned two in 2.0 innings of relief.

In the second game, FIU led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning until Jacksonville earned two runs on two hits and one FIU error. In JU’s second at-bat, Charli Bradshaw hit a solo home run, while shortly after Jackie DiPiazza added JU’s second run of the inning.

JU scored its third run in the bottom of the fifth inning on Brooke Smith’s RBI single to center field for a 5-3 game before FIU’s Stephanie Texeira hit a 3-RBI home run in the top of the seventh inning for an 8-3 win.

Sophomore tosser Taylor Rossman (1-4) started the game and allowed five runs (five earned) on five hits in 1.2 innings before freshman Jessi Walker came in for 5.1 innings of relief.

Next, Jacksonville returns to Atlantic Sun action this weekend, competing at Lipscomb March 15-16.
