@JUsoftball Drops Two at Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In a whirlwind of a day, Jacksonville University softball dropped two at Lipscomb, falling 10-7 in nine innings and 11-0 in five.

Lipscomb’s Brittany Elmore recorded a walk-off 3-RBI home run to finish the first game while Brianne Welch wacked a grand slam to run-rule Jacksonville and complete the second.

Jacksonville falls to 11-14 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic Sun. Lipscomb improves to 23-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

On the day, Karson Tuck led the Fins at .600 (3-for-5) with one home run and two RBI. Stephanie Frances (2-for-7) also bombed a homer and brought two home.


Play was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when Jacksonville recorded four runs on three hits. Victoria Brown opened the inning with a hit by pitch, Ashley Simon singled to right field on a full count, Jackie DiPiazza pinch ran for Simon, Codi Kelly recorded a sac bunt, and Emily Sanchez hit an RBI single to score Brown from third for a 1-0 lead. Adrienne Ramsay came in to pinch run for Sanchez, Tuck fouled out to right field for an RBI to score DiPiazza from third base for a 2-0 advantage, and Frances followed with a 2-RBI home run to right field for a 4-0 shutout.

Lipscomb answered in the bottom of the sixth inning on Welch’s RBI single that scored Rena Cothron.

From that point on it was a back-and-forth fight.

Lipscomb added three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game 4-4 before Jacksonville took a 7-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning. Tuck led-off with a solo home run to right center, Lexie Ballard's RBI triple to center plated Brooke Smith, and Ballard scored Jacksonville’s seventh run from third base on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the eighth, Lipscomb earned three runs to tie the game once more at 7-7 and ultimately won 10-7 after Elmore's 3-RBI walk-off home run against Taylor Rossman in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Jacksonville scored seven runs on 12 hits, while Lipscomb tallied 10 runs on 14 hits.

Lipscomb’s Tanner Sanders (8-2) earned the win, pitching the final 1.1 innings of relief for Ashley Anderson. Anderson allowed seven runs (seven earned) on 11 hits and two walks.

Brown pitched 8.0 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits and two walks. She tallied four strikeouts, tossing 110 strikes of 160 pitches. Rossman (1-5) threw the final 0.2 innings and allowed three runs (three earned) on two hits and one walk.


Lipscomb opened scoring in the second game with a run in the bottom of the first inning when Paige Neely hit an RBI single to right field that scored Brittany Elmore. The Lady Bisons followed with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and seven in the bottom of the fifth inning for their mercy-rule win.

They garnered 11 runs on nine hits and one error. Both Tuck and Frances recoded one hit apiece for Jacksonville.

Rossman (1-6) started in the circle, allowing four runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks. Freshman Jessi Walker pitched 0.2 innings of relief, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and one walk.

Lipscomb’s Heather Parker (6-2) fanned five, walked two and allowed two hits in the complete 5.0 inning effort.

Next, Jacksonville will conclude its series at Lipscomb on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT.
