Mercer Sweeps @JUsoftball

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball dropped its double-header against Mercer on Saturday, falling 6-1 in the first and 2-0 in the second.

Jacksonville stands 12-17 overall and 3-7 in the Atlantic Sun. Mercer improves to 22-10 and 5-2, respectively.

Lexie Ballard led the Fins at the plate, hitting .500 (2-for-4), followed by Charli Bradshaw (.400, 2-for-5).


The Dolphins scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning when Karson Tuck's RBI single scored Victoria Brown. Brown opened the frame with a double to center field.

Mercer responded in the following frame with three runs on the Bears’ first of two homers in the game. Taylor Miller singled to second base, McKenzie Woody singled a bunt, and Kaytlin Haney hit a three-run home run.

Scoreless through another four innings, the Bears added their final three insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning for their eventual 6-1 victory. Natalie Shiver blasted a three-run home run to center field that scored Caroline Taylor from third base and Molly Garmany from first base.

Brown (6-7) allowed six runs (six earned) on nine hits and one walk while fanning two. Mercer’s Julie Rice (7-2) struck out three and allowed one run (one earned) on six hits and one walk.


The Bears scored one run in the top of the second inning and one in the top of the seventh for its 2-0 shutout win. Garmany scored Mercer’s first run after being hit by the pitch, advancing to second base on a sac bunt and tagging home on an error. Kaylynn Sloat tallied Mercer’s final run on a solo shot to center field.

Cecile Gomez (3-2) took the loss, allowing two runs (two earned) on seven hits while fanning five. Mercer’s Kirsten Stevens (7-2) allowed two hits and one walk while striking out five.
