@JUsoftball Splits Against Georgia Southern
STATESBORO, Ga. – Jacksonville University softball earned its fifth shutout victory on the season after beating Georgia Southern 4-0 in game one before falling 11-1 in five innings in game two.
Jacksonville stands 16-27 overall.
GAME ONE: JACKSONVILLE 4, GEORGIA SOUTHERN 0
JU opened the first game in the top of the third inning with back-to-back home runs. Karson Tuck smacked a long ball to left field to score Victoria Brown from second base. Brown reached base on a single to center field and advanced to second base on Emily Sanchez’s sac bunt. Charli Bradshaw then followed with a solo shot to the same location for a 3-0 Fin lead.
In the bottom of the third frame, GSU was just shy of tying the contest with a three-run homer to right field as Bradshaw grabbed the long ball in right field to end the frame.
The Fins loaded the bases in the top of the fifth frame, although unable to capitalize. Tuck doubled to left center just shy of her second homer, Bradshaw singled to the pitcher and Ballard walked before Ashley Simon struck out swinging to end the top of the fifth.
GSU was close to scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning when runners reached third and second base before a fly out to center field on a full count with two outs ended the Eagles’ hopes.
During the top of the seventh frame, Bradshaw nearly knocked out her second homer of the game as well to left center, with the ball just short of making it past the fence. Her RBI double scored Tuck from third base for a 4-0 JU advantage.
JU tallied four runs on seven hits and two errors. GSU recorded zero runs on five hits.
Taylor Rossman earned her third win of the season in the complete effort, striking out six while allowing five hits and one walk.
GSU’s Sarah Purvis fanned 10 while allowing four runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks.
GAME TWO: GEORGIA SOUTHERN 11, JACKSONVILLE 1 (FIVE INNINGS)
GSU scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, six in the third inning and three in the fourth inning for an eventual 11-1 run-rule victory.
Emily Snider tripled to right center and Shelby Morrill followed with a two-run home run to right field against Jessi Walker to put GSU up 2-0.
The Eagles increased their lead to 8-0 in the bottom of third inning with six runs after loading the bags. Brenna McLendon walked, Taylor Rogers singled a bunt, and Snider walked. Morrill then walked to plate McLendon, Kourtny Thomas hit a two-RBI single to right field and Morgan Robinson hit a two-RBI double to center field. After two outs with a ground out and strike out, A.J. Hamilton singled to right field to plate Robinson from third base.
Emily Sanchez broke up GSU’s shutout in the top of the fourth inning with a lead-off solo home run for an 8-1 game.
To start the bottom of the fourth frame, freshman Blaise Brooks entered the mound to replace Rossman for her first career appearance. GSU increased its lead to 11-1 on Johnson’s RBI double to left center and Savanah Coon’s two-RBI single.
Walker took the loss, allowing four runs (four earned) on three hits and one walk in 2.0 innings. Brown, Rossman and Brooks each tossed in relief.
GSU’s Brooke Red earned her 12th win and allowed one run (one earned) on two hits.
Next, Jacksonville will return to Atlantic Sun action this weekend to host ETSU and celebrate senior day.
