@JUsoftball Concludes 2014 Regular-Season with Road Defeat at Stetson

DeLand, Fla. – Jacksonville University softball concluded its regular-season on Sunday, April 27 with an 8-3 loss at Stetson, although the Fins still captured the road series win with their double-header sweep on Saturday.

JU finished 20-29 overall and 8-16 in the Atlantic Sun. Stetson improves to 33-11 and 16-7, respectively.

The Fins led 1-0 after the top of the first frame. Codi Kelly led off with a hit by pitch and scored on Karson Tuck’s RBI double to right center. But Stetson took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs on four hits. Meredith Owen hit an RBI single through the left side that plated Jessie TenBroeck while Amanda Grimaldo followed with an RBI bunt that scored Chrissy Morello.

The Hatter’s added five more runs on five hits in the bottom of the second inning for a 7-1 lead. Morello hit an RBI single to right that scored Courtney Brandt, Grimaldo hit an RBI single through the right side that scored TenBroeck, Kayla Drury walked for an RBI that scored Morello, and Jessica Griffin hit a two-run RBI double to center that plated Grimaldo and Molly Shasteen.

In the top of the fourth frame, Jacksonville scored two runs on two hits to make it a 7-3 contest as Lexie Ballard hit her second home run of the weekend series – a two-run RBI to center – that plated Charli Bradshaw. But, Stetson scored once more in the bottom of the sixth frame to take an 8-3 lead and the Fins couldn’t add any more in the top of the seventh.

On the mound, Victoria Brown (10-11) allowed seven runs (seven earned) on eight hits and three walks in 1.2 innings. Jessi Walker entered for relief in the second inning and allowed one run (zero earned) on four hits and two walks.

Owen (21-6) allowed three runs (three earned) on five hits in the complete game.

Seniors Codi Kelly, Karson Tuck, Meagan Balding and Miranda Fleming all competed on the day. Kelly recorded one run, Tuck finished 1-for-3 with one RBI, Balding went 1-for-3, and Fleming finished 0-for-2.

Over the weekend, three Dolphins hit .400 or better as Bradshaw (.444) went 4-for-9 with two runs and one RBI, Ballard (.429) finished 3-for-7 with two runs (two homers) and five RBI, and Tuck (.400) went 4-for-10 with two runs, two doubles, one homer and four RBI.
