JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As one of the most storied rivalries in the state, Jacksonville University and North Florida are always prepared to do battle in the River City Rumble. The upcoming meeting between the school's beach volleyball programs will be no different, except there's a little more at stake.
The ASUN Conference Tournament begins Saturday at 9 a.m. with No. 4 UNF taking on No. 5 Jacksonville, and the dual will serve as the first of eight in the double-elimination tournament bracket.
Each dual will be played on the Cooper Beach Volleyball Court at Stetson. Click the links above for access to the ESPN3 broadcast and live stats.
JU's Last Outing
To secure their spot in the ASUN Tournament, the Dolphins swept their first ASUN series in a pair of 3-2 victories over Coastal Carolina.
Jizzyan Gesualdo and Hanna McMahon helped guide the team's success with a 3-0 record in their first pairing this season. The duo tabbed JU's lone win in its matchup with Mercer (17-21, 21-18, 15-10) before knocking off the Chants' No. 5 in the final two duals.
Jacksonville has used 22 pairs this season, and Morgan Dees and Megan Widener continue to lead all of them with six wins. The two manage a 2-1 record in the top flight and are 4-13 in the second.
Scouting the Opposition
In the regular season meetings, the Ospreys captured both duals over JU by a score of 4-1. The crosstown rivals won the tournament a season ago, and enter this year's event with a 12-12 record.
UNF's top pair Courtney Miller and Katerina Raicevic are 14-10 on the year and its No. 5 of Nicole DeBolt and Shannon McPherson are 14-8.
The winner of JU/UNF will go on to play the top-ranked Hatters while the losing side plays the loser of No. 3 Florida Gulf Coast/No. 2 Mercer. The full bracket can be viewed here.
