JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University (2-1) opens the home portion of the 2017 season Tuesday with a bang by hosting second-ranked and College World Series participant University of Florida (3-0). The Dolphins and Gators are meeting for the 85th time overall and the 40th time in John Sessions Stadium. The Gators will then return the favor on Wednesday by hosting JU for the 45th time.
Though the Dolphins stumbled a bit out of the gate with a 5-2 loss to Morehead State, they rebounded with authority in the final two games of the Jackson State Invitational, hammering Jackson State (1-3) for seven runs and shutting out Morehead State (2-2) in two stellar pitching performances.
Both Chris Gau and Mark Potter went six scoreless innings in their respective starts with Gau snagging nine strikeouts and Potter allowing just two hits. Nathan Koslowski had four hits and an RBI in three starts in the outfield, and Angel Camacho knocked home three runs.
Scouting the Opponents
The Gators finished seventh in the College World Series in 2016 and have made the NCAA tournament in each of Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan's nine years at the helm, a school record. O'Sullivan is just one win away from his 400th. Dalton Guthrie, who is averaging .417 with five hits this season, paces Florida offensively. Four Gators have hit a home run, and they've stolen eight bases in just three games. Jackson Kowar has a 1.59 ERA.
- Tackling Top Teams: JU is 11-33 all-time in matchups with Top 25 teams. The Dolphins will host #2 Florida at home Tuesday, where they have a 6-15 Top 25 record, and then travel to UF Wednesday. On the road the Dolphins are 5-13 against Top 25 teams.
- Tying Up the Gators at Home: With a win against the Gators at home on Tuesday the Dolphins would put the series record at John Sessions Stadium to an even 20-20. Overall Florida leads the all-time series 53-31.
The Dolphins will host Georgia State on Friday, February 24th through Sunday, February 26th.
