JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - For the 15th time in program history, the Jacksonville University baseball team is NCAA Regional bound. The Dolphins (39-19, 14-6 ASUN, No. 23 RPI) were tabbed as the No. 2 seed in the Gainesville Regional of the 2018 NCAA Baseball Tournament, and are set to compete alongside host No. 1 Florida (42-17,20-10 SEC, No. 1 RPI) , No. 3 Florida Atlantic (40-17-1, 19-18-1 C-USA, No. 31 RPI) and No. 4 Columbia (20-28, 13-8, No. 184 RPI) June 1-4 at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium. JU was selected with 63 other teams as part of this year's field, which was announced the in annual NCAA Baseball Selection Show on ESPNU Monday afternoon.
The team's No. 2 seeding is the highest in program history. The Dolphins begin their 2018 NCAA Postseason campaign against FAU, Friday, June 1 at 6:30 p.m, while the Gators and Lions will face off at noon.
After finishing their 2018 campaign with the most wins since 2006, JU recieved a bid to the dance for the first time since 2011, when the team advanced to the Gainesville Regional as the No. 3 seed. Following the conclusion of its 2018 regular season slate with a home sweep of ASUN foe Kennesaw State, the 'Phins entered the 2018 ASUN Championship as the No. 2 seed, advancing to the semifinal round.
Playing one of its toughest schedules in recent memory, Jacksonville ammased its greatest win total both at home (22) and on the road (15) since 2006. Collecting five wins over nationally-ranked teams, the Dolphins took down the Gators, 8-4, in Gainesville on April 17, knocking off the nation's top squad for the first time since 2007. The team held two seperate eight-game winning streaks over the course of the year, marking the first time since 1994 that they have done so.
Earning its first recognition in national polls since 2001, the team broke into the Baseball America Top-25 poll on April 23, following a 21-year absence.
In 14 previous regional appearances, JU also played in the Gainesville Regional in 1991, 2009 and 2011, picking up wins over Bethune-Cookman (8-7, 2009) and Manhattan (5-4, 2011). The 'Phins made their best postseason run to-date in 1976, winning a pair of contests to advance to the Tallahassee Regional Final.
