Record-Setting Night Leads to Dolphin Victory

Post Game Press Conference presented by Baptist Health

Highlights From the Game

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University's men's basketball team (4-2) made a record 16 three pointers Wednesday in its home debut against Trinity Baptist College (3-6). The Dolphins defeated the Eagles 97-52.

"We did a really good job of getting the ball in the paint," said Head Coach Tony Jasick. "We missed a few of our first shots, but the guys were able to get the ball in the paint, get to the rim, and get a couple of good looks to get us settled in. In a game like this it's valuable for some of our young guys and Andris Misters and Darius Dawkins to get some big minutes, and they certainly didn't disappoint."

Second Half

Jacksonville opened the second half in similar fashion to the first half, scoring on their first attempt, a Holder 3. TBC traded buckets with JU early on the second half, but the Dolphins just had too much momentum for the Eagles to catch up. The lead stretched to as much as 48 points, 86-48, on a Dawkins three. Tanner Rubio hit the record 16th-made three pointer to put the score at 89-42 with 4:33 remaining. All Dolphins that touched the floor scored in the game, with Lee Richmond hitting two free throws to put the score at 93-49 with 1:57 left. Jacksonville won the game by 45, 97-52.

First Half

TBC took the opening tip, but couldn't convert on its first six possessions. Instead Jacksonville struck first, jumping out to a 4-0 lead on layups from Holder and Fernandez. Trinity pulled within one point, 4-3, on a deep three, but JU responded with a 4-0 run to stretch the lead to 8-3. TBC again pulled within one at 10-9, and again the Dolphins came back with a run of their own, outscoring the Eagles 15-0 to lead 23-9 with just over 10 minutes left in the half. JU held TBC scoreless in six straight possessions during that run. Through the rest of the period Jacksonville outscored Trinity 23-7, and led by 28, 46-18, at the half.

  • Dawkins led all scorers with 21 points. The senior from McLeansville, N.C., hit a career-tying seven three pointers in the game.

  • JU hit 16 three pointers, a new record for made threes by the team. The previous record of 15 was set against Trinity Baptist last season.
  • This is the second time this season JU has finished with 10 or fewer turnovers.
