LakePoint, Ga.- As Jacksonville men's basketball's JD Notae's freshman campaign continues to unfold, his play seems to improve with every game. The Covington, Ga. native was recognized by the ASUN Conference for the second week in a row, following monster performances in the team's last two contests.
Notae was named the ASUN Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week, the conference announced, Tuesday. The ASUN's leading freshman scorer provided a pair of big games over the past seven days, allowing JU to earn a non-conference victory over Middle Georgia State, and stay competitive with power five foe Michigan. Averaging 26 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals over the two games, he dropped a career-best 30 points in Thursday's win over the Knights, guiding the Dolphins to a 81-60 advantage. Notae led all scorers in Saturday evening's battle against the Wolverines, dropping 22 points, and helping JU to force 14 Michigan turnovers.
"We're happy for JD," said Head Coach Tony Jasick. "Anytime an individual is recognized for their performance it's a compliment to them, their teammates, and our program."
The awards are Notae's second and third of the season, and mark the second straight week that he has locked up the Newcomer accolade. He is the second Dolphin to win each award this season, with redshirt-senior Devin Harris and redshirt-junior Jace Hogan having already been honored with the Player and Newcomer of the week awards respectively this year.
Notae and the Jacksonville men's basketball team return home Tuesday evening for their final non-conference outing of the season, hosting cross-town foe Trinity Baptist at Swisher Gym at 7:00 pm. Conference play will begin this weekend for the Dolphins, when they travel to rival North Florida for the first of two installments of the River City Rumble.
