MACON, Ga. – The ASUN Conference announced on Monday afternoon its weekly awards winners and following a breakout week for the Jacksonville men's basketball team, freshman Tyreese Davis has been chosen as the Newcomer of the Week.
Jacksonville was unbeaten last week with wins over Presbyterian on the road and over Middle Georgia State at home thanks in large-part to the efforts of Davis, who averaged 16.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG, 2 APG & 1.5 BPG. In the Dolphins' 94-88 road victory vs. Presbyterian, Davis secured his first career double-double on 15 points and 10 rebounds. The Kansas City, Mo. native, then set a career-high in scoring with 18 points in Jacksonville's sixth win of the season. Davis, a guard, shot 13-of-15 from the field for the week with his only two misses coming on three-point attempts (4-of-6).
Davis has started all 11 contests for JU and has now scored in double figures in three-straight, all wins for the Dolphins and six times total this season. The freshman is shooting 49.3 percent from the floor for the year and averaging 8.8 points per game. His field goal percentage ranks 10th overall in the ASUN and is one of three Dolphins to rank inside the top 10 in that category along with Jalyn Hinton (Third – 64.3) and Jace Hogan (Ninth – 50.0).
Up next the Dolphins will enter the final stages of the non-conference slate, beginning with a trip to Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 15 before heading north for dates with Notre Dame (Dec. 20) and Indiana (Dec. 20). The conclusion of the non-conference schedule will come on Dec. 30 when the Dolphins look for a season-sweep of Presbyterian at Swisher Gymnasium. ASUN Conference play officially gets underway on Jan. 5 with 2017 Champion and preseason favorite Lipscomb visiting Swisher.
