MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A school record 273 team score led by a sizzling -7 (65) from newcomer Franck Medale (Valence d’Agen, France) pushed the Jacksonville men’s golf team into the lead after completion of the second round of play at the GolfWeek Challenge on Monday. At -23 for the tournament, the Dolphins, which posted a -15 team round on Monday at the True Blue course, now hold a two shot lead over Old Dominion heading into final round action on Tuesday.
A junior playing in his first tournament for Jacksonville, Medale posted eight birdies against one bogey on Monday. Following a -3 (34) on the front nine he shot -4 (31) on the back including birdies on Nos. 15, 17 and 18. At -10 (134) for 36 holes he holds the individual lead with Bryce Howell of Fruman who shot a -7 (65) on Sunday.
A three hour rain delay did little to slow the Dolphins however as all four counters were under par. Senior Colin Monagle (Jacksonville, Fla.) used eagles on Nos. 4 and 9 to highlight a -4 (68) finish for the second consecutive day which moved him to -8 (136) and in sole possession of fourth place heading into the final 18 on Tuesday.
Freshman Raul Pereda (Cordoba, Mexico) came in at -2 (70) for the second time in as many days while senior Connor Salanger (Syracuse, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring with a -2 (70) himself.
The 273 bested the previous mark of 274 set in the second round of the Don Benbow Invitational held at a par 70 Jacksonville Beach GC layout in 2008-09.
Paired with Old Dominion and Valparaiso, Jacksonville is scheduled to begin final round action at 8:25 am on Tuesday.
