MORGANTON, N.C. - A school record 63 by newcomer Franck Medale (Valence d'Agen, France) was just one of the many highlights for the Dolphins for the first 36 holes at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Monday. Behind the play of Medale at the Mimosa Hills Golf Club, Jacksonville has surge to a 14 shot lead heading into the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
Playing in just his second tournament for the Dolphins, Medale followed his 63 (-7) with a 66 (-4) which also left him with a 36 hole program record of 129. At -11 for the tournament he holds a one shot lead over Davis Parker of Presbyterian at -10 (63-67).
The previous 18 hole record was set by Christian Martin with a 64 in the second round of the Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach GC in March of 2009. The 36 hole mark was held by Duncan Stewart with a 132 at A-Sun Championship in 2005.
Medale had an eagle and seven birdies in his round, including four straight on Nos. 14-15-16-17. He made six more birdies in the second round on the way to a 66 which is now tied for the fifth lowest round in school history.
He was not the only one with that 60s feeling on Monday. Raul Pereda had a second round 68 (-2) which helped push the Dolphins to -4 as a team with a 276. In the morning Brett McKinnon also had a 68 as Jacksonville posted a -2, 278. Thee 36 hole team score of 554 is tied for the second lowest in school history and one off the mark of 553 set at the GolfWeek Program Challenge last month.
The 10-team tournament concludes on Tuesday. The Dolphins get underway at 9:10 am off hole No. 1.
