MORGANTON, N.C. - The final round of the Donald Ross Intercollegiate was washed out on Tuesday giving the Jacksonville men's golf team their first team tournament crown since 2010. The Dolphins claimed a 14-shot victory in the 10-team event held at Mimosa Hills Golf Club with rounds of 278 (-2) and 276 (-4) on Monday.
The 554 team score tied for the second lowest in school history for 36 holes and is one off the mark of 553 set at the GolfWeek Program Challenge last month. Jacksonville has now finished top two in both events this season. The tournament win is the first for the Dolphins since the program claimed the 18-team The Hummingbird Intercollegiate at Sapphire Valley in North Carolina in November of 2010.
Along with the team title, newcomer Franck Medale (Valence d'Agen, France) claimed individual medalist honors after his record breaking day on Monday. Medale opened with a school record 63 (-7) then added a 66 (-4). His 129 (-10) 36 hole total is also a school record. The individual medalist honor is the first tournament title by a Jacksonville golfer since Matt Kleinrock won the Braveheart Classic at Oak Valley Golf Club in California in March of 2007.
The previous 18 hole record was set by Christian Martin with a 64 in the second round of the Don Benbow Invitational at Jacksonville Beach GC in March of 2009. The 36 hole mark was held by Duncan Stewart with a 132 at A-Sun Championship in 2005.
Freshman Raul Pereda (Cordoba, Mexico) takes home his first career top 10, placing 10th at even par 140 with rounds of 72 and 68. Senior Brett McKinnon (Glace Bay, Nova Scotia) was 15th at +2 140 with rounds of 68 and 74.
Presbyterian and Wofford tied for second in the team standings at +8 568.
Jacksonville is back in action on Oct. 27-28 at the Quail Valley Invitational held at the Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla.
