BRASELTON, Ga. – Jacksonville University's men's golf team has won the inaugural Bridgestone Match Play tournament, hosted at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga.
"When we first put all of this together, it was really just about getting some playing time on the course that hosts our Atlantic Sun championship tournament," said Head Coach Mike Blackburn. "Eight guys came out here, and they were all awesome."
The Dolphins faced Lipscomb in the championship round after beating USC Upstate in round two and Appalachian State in round one. Jacksonville won the final round 4-2. Second seed Franck Medale took down his matchup 6 & 5, and fifth seed Ryan Jahn and sixth seed Sam Uhland each beat their opponents 2 & 1. Top seed David Wicks and third seed Raul Pereda split their points with their Lipscomb counterparts, and fourth seed Prem Samritpricha barely lost to his counterpart, falling on the last hole.
To get to the championship round, JU had to face off against tournament host USC Upstate. In that matchup Wicks took down the Trojan top seed 4 & 2, Medale beat his counterpart on the final hole, Samritpricha won 3 & 1, and Uhland won 5 & 4. Pereda and Jahn lost to their opponents, but the Dolphins still took the round 4-2.
The first round also went the Dolphins' way, with Wicks, Medale, Samritpricha, and Uhland winning their first round matchups. Pereda lost on the 17th hole, as did Jahn. Jacksonville beat Appalachian State 4-2.
"Everyone really came to play today," said Blackburn. "It was a real team effort. I'm incredibly proud of the effort that everyone put out."
Up next for the men's golf team is the Donald Ross Intercollegiate on Sunday, October 11 and Monday, October 12, hosted at the Mimosa Hills Golf Club in Morganton, N.C.
