MYRTLE BEACH, S. C. – Head Coach Mike Blackburn and the rest of the Jacksonville University men's golf team will hit the road Saturday for their first event of the 2016-17 season, the GolfWeek Program Challenge at the True Blue Golf Club.
"It's the first tournament of the year, which is usually a good chance to find out a lot more about our team," said Blackburn. "We haven't had much opportunity to practice yet, but the team seems to be getting along pretty well. I'm optimistic about this event, and I think it will be a good test for our team."
The 7,126-yard, Par 72 course will host a field of 16 teams, including Jacksonville, Boston College, Campbell, Elon, Gardner-Webb, Houston Baptist, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Mercer, Morehead State, Radford, Stetson, Tennessee Tech, Valparaiso, Western Carolina, and Xavier.
Defending Atlantic Sun individual champion David Wicks, senior Ryan Jahn, junior Raul Pereda, 2015-16 All-ASUN Freshman Sam Uhland, and newcomer Elliott Fullalove will play in the event for Jacksonville.
"We have four returners this year, including the defending ASUN champion and a member of the All-ASUN freshman team," continued Blackburn. "We also added Elliott in the offseason, who finished third individually at the 2016 NJCAA National Championship."
This is the third time the Dolphins have competed at the GolfWeek Challenge, and so far Jacksonville has experienced considerable success. The Dolphins came in second in 2014, and last season they won the event with Wicks taking the individual title. The senior from Bexhill, England, finished with a total of 203, 13 under par.
