PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla.– Jacksonville University opened the 2017 John Hayt Collegiate Invitational with three golfers with 11 holes of par or better, including an eagle, to finish eighth through the first round at Sawgrass Country Club.
The first round opened at 10:00 a.m.; David Wicks carded 70 to pace the Dolphins with an eagle and 15 holes of par or better. The senior from Bexhill, England, sat in a four-way tie for fifth after one. Just two strokes behind was Sam Uhland; the sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla. had 14 holes of par or better en route to a 72 to close the day in a six-way tie for 19th. Ryan Jahn shot a 75 in the first round with 11 holes of par or better to tie 36th, while Elliott Fullalovecarded 78 to tie for 63rd, and Raul Pereda had a 79 to tie for 69th.
The Dolphins finished the first round in eighth place, seven strokes above par with a 295 total. UCF leads the 15-team field three under par with a 285, followed by Louisville one stroke behind. Liberty (289), UAB (290), and North Florida (291) round out the top five teams after the first round. North Texas (292) and Campbell (293) finished the day close behind in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
The second round will begin at 10:00 a.m. for JU with Uhland teeing off on the first hole. He'll be followed by Fullalove at 10:09 a.m., Jahn at 10:18 a.m., Pereda at 10:27 a.m., and Wicks at 10:36 a.m.
The forecast for the Dolphins' tee time tomorrow is 71 degrees with winds eight miles an hour north-northwest. The temperature will climb to a high of 78 degrees around 3:00 p.m., with winds steadily increasing to a maximum of 13 mph around 2:00 p.m.
