BRASELTON, Ga. – After withdrawing from what was supposed to be the first event of the 2017-18 season due to Hurricane Irma, Jacksonville University's men's golf team will finally get to begin its pursuit of another NCAA Championship appearance Tuesday at the 2017 Bridgestone Invitational, hosted by USC Upstate at Chateau Elan.
"It's the first tournament of the year, which is usually a good chance to find out a lot more about our team," said Head Coach Mike Blackburn. "Though it wasn't ideal to miss our first event of the season, it's great to open the year with the course we play our ASUN Conference championship tournament on. It's a tremendous advantage to get seven guys up here to preview the course so they know what to expect in April."
Originally slated to begin with 36 holes of stroke play on Monday, Sep. 18 and conclude with 18 holes of match play on Tuesday, the 2017 edition of the tournament was modified to 36 holes of stroke play to take place solely on Tuesday. Teams will play six players and count the best four for each round. A handy comparison of the rules of stroke and match play can be found here.
Jacksonville's six-man team will include veterans Raul Pereda, Elliott Fullalove, and Sam Uhland, who all appeared in JU's run to the 2017 NCAA Championship. They're joined by newcomers Eduardo Carrete, Michael Sakane, and Aaerishna Shahsthy. In addition, senior Dolphin Zachary Alligood will compete as an individual.
The Dolphins will be competing for the 2017 Bridgestone title on the 6,971-yard, Par 72 Legends Course at Chateau Elan. Built on 170 acres, Legends was designed by Denis Griffiths along three lakes and two creeks, with water coming into play on 10 of 18 holes. In addition, 87 bunkers give the course character and definition. The Legends Course opened in July of 1989.
The season officially begins at 8 a.m., when Shahsthy tees off at the first hole. He'll be followed in nine-minute intervals by Sakane, Uhland, Fullalove, Carrete, and Pereda. Alligood will tee off on the first hole at 8:54 a.m. Weather for the contest is expected to be mostly sunny with a high of 87 degrees and about a 10 percent chance of rain.
