LakePointe, Ga. – For the first time in program history, the Jacksonville men's golf team had a pair of players receive weekly honors concurrently. Senior Raul Pereda and freshman Michael Sakane were named the ASUN Conference Co-Golfers of the Week Friday, following solid performances in weekend competition.
"I am very proud of Raul and Michael, and am glad to see their hard work pay off," Head Coach Mike Blackburn said. "Both are hard workers, and have a bright future on the course. We are looking forward to seeing how they will progress this spring."
Participating in the 2018 Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla. last weekend, the two tied for fifth place individually, helping JU to a second place finish out of the 14-team field. Each shot two of three rounds under par at the Golden Eagle Country Club, finishing four-under 212, a 54-hole best for Sakane.
The Japan native began the tournament by firing off a career-low 68 on the first 18 holes, the best Dolphin round on the weekend. Pereda was a stroke behind after the first day, shooting one-over 73 and two-under 70 to match his freshman counterpart, who carded one-under 71 and one-over 73 in the latter two rounds.
The honor is the first of any kind for Sekane in his Dolphin career, while Pereda, a Second-Team All-Conference selection last season, picks up a weekly accolade for the second time. The announcement marks the first time in program history that a freshman has received a weekly conference award.
Jacksonville men's golf is back in action March 17-19, competing at the John Hayt Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
