Sakane Leads Way After Day 1 of ASUN Championship

BRASELTON, Ga. – Freshman Michael Sakane shot one-under 71 in the first round of the 2018 ASUN Championships Sunday, finishing day one in fifth place individually. The 2017-18 ASUN Freshman of the Year made three birdies on the back nine, en-route to his eighth round of par-or-better this season.

The Japan native leads the way for the Dolphins' five-man team after a round of play at the par 72, 7032-yard Legends Course at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. Jacksonville sits in fourth place after day one, holding leads over USC Upstate, Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson. The team tallied 14-over, 302 on the first flight, and trail two-time defending champions Kennesaw State (eight-over, 296) by six strokes.

ASUN First-Team selection No. 38 Raul Pereda birdied on the course's ninth hole, shooting three-over 75 the first time around to tie for 12th with three other competitors.

 ASUN Second-Team members Elliott Fullalove and Eduardo Carrete each went five-over 78 on their first 18 of the tournament, sitting in a knot for 24th place entering day two. ASUN All-Freshman Teamer Aaeri Krishnan is tied for 27th after round one, carding seven-over 79.

The highest-ranked team in the seven-squad field, No. 26 North Florida (three-under, 285) holds a one stroke lead over Lipscomb (two-under, 286) after the opening round of competition at the 40th edition of the league's postseason tournament.

The Bisons holds the top two position in the individual field, with senior Eric Ansett shooting four-under 68 to lead the way. Defending medalist No. 17 Dawson Armstrong sits tied with the Ospreys' No. 98 Andrew Alligood and Dillon Woods for second, with each carding three-under 69 the first time around.

Play at the 2018 ASUN Championships will commence on Monday, April 22, with round two of three taking place in the afternoon.
