BRASELTON, Ga. – Beginning their regular season campaign in the month of August for the first time in recent memory, the Jacksonville University men's golf team picked up a head-to-head victory to open the 2018-19 slate, Thursday afternoon.
The Dolphins defeated 2018 ASUN Runner-Up Lipscomb University in a 36-hole event, the first of two that the team will compete in this year against conference opponents.
The Dolphins got off to a quick lead early in the day, eventually winning by a score of 10-2 in the match play occasion. The day included nine holes of best ball and alternate shot each, as well as a round of 18-hole individual matches on the par 72, 7,032-yard Legends Course at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga., the sight of the last nine ASUN Conference Championships.
"I was very proud of the way the team played to start the season," Head Coach Mike Blackburn said. "They played hard, had great attitudes, looked sharp, and put forth a wonderful display of effort."
Teeing off just after 8:00 a.m. EST, Jacksonville took a 5-1 lead after the first half of action, with the Dolphins' six competitors splitting into three pairs to face the Bisons in best ball & alternate shot matches.
Juniors Eduardo Carrete and Thomas Thurloway teamed up to win their head-to-head match ad pick up two points in favor of JU. Sophomores Michael Sakane and Aaeri Krishnan followed suit in their match, while senior Sam Uhland and freshman Davis Smith split a point with Lipscomb.
Play then continued in the afternoon with 18-hole individual rounds, with each worth a point towards the overall total. The 'Phins completed the victory in near-sweeping fashion, with Carrete, Smith, Sakane, Thurloway and Krishnan each overcoming Bison golfers in their head-to-head matches.
"The win certainly makes me optimistic for the future, with nothing but positive things ahead," Blackburn added.
Jacksonville, who finished the 2017-18 season at No. 64 in the final GolfStat rankings, will look to continue early-season momentum heading into future competition. The 'Phins will have the next two weeks off before opening tournament play at the GolfWeek Conference Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, September 16-18.
