CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Competing in his first tournament as a member of the Jacksonville University men's golf team, transfer junior Thomas Thurloway carded -6, 66 in the first round of the 2018 GolfWeek Conference Challenge to lead 85-player field after day one.
The Crawley, England native who began his collegiate career at Toledo University in Toledo, Ohio, registered a round-best seven birdies with just one bogey, concluding the first of three days of action at the 54-hole event with a one-stroke lead over Iowa's Gonzalo Neal.
"Thomas played very nicely today," Head Coach Mike Blackburn said. "He drove the ball very well and seemed like he had a 6 to 15 foot birdie putt on almost every hole. He played very consistently all day and turned in a very good round of golf."
Thurloway's efforts allowed the Dolphins, who began the 2018-19 season with a decisive match play victory over conference foe Lipscomb, to finish in second place out of the 16-team field. The team carded an impressive -7, 281, four strokes behind Sun Belt Conference representative Arkansas State (-11, 277) for the lead.
Senior Sam Uhland joined Thurloway in shooting under-par to position himself in the top-10 individually. The Jacksonville native turned in -2, 70 to move into a five-way tie for ninth place with competitors from Arkansas State, Kansas State and San Jose State after round one. Uhland's round of under-par golf was his 25th as a JU golfer, allowing him to take sole possession of seventh place all-all time in rounds of par or better.
Reigning ASUN Conference Freshman of the Year Michael Sakane was the last of three Dolphin team members to card even or better on the day, holing a pair of birdies to shoot a 72, good for a tie for 23rd.
Round two of action at the Par-72, 7071-yard Donald Ross Course at the Cedar Rapids Country Club will commence at 9:55 a.m. EST on Monday, Sept. 16, with Jacksonville beginning the day's campaign at 11:25 a.m. from hole 1, as part of a double-tee start.
