Dolphins Continue Top-5 Performance at GolfWeek Conference Challenge

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Competing against one team from 15 other NCAA Division I athletic conferences, the Jacksonville University men's golf team continued their stellar performance at the 2018 GolfWeek Conference Challenge in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Monday.

Attending the event for the first time in program history, the Dolphins wrapped the second round of play at the par 72, 7001-yard Donald Ross Course at the Cedar Rapids Country Club in a tie for fourth place, standing alongside Mountain West Conference representative San Jose State.

Beginning the day's action just after 11:00 a.m. EST as part of a double-tee start from hole 1, the team carded +4, 292 on the day, concluding the round with a -3, 573 score after 36-holes. Aside from entering the final day of competition knotted with the Trojans, the 'Phins sit a stroke off of Big South foe Campbell (-4, 572), eight strokes behind Big Ten host Iowa (-11, 565) and 20 points off the leader Arkansas State (-23, 553), who further positioned themselves to become the first non-Power 5 school to take win the event in its history.

Junior Thomas Thurloway, who entered the day in a tie for first place, continued a successful start to his tournament career in the green & gold. The England native went +1, 73 in the second round, concluding the day gridlocked for second individually, sitting three strokes off the lead and tied with Arkansas State's Joel Wendin and Iowa's Alex Schaake at -5, 139.

The best showing of the day from a Dolphin came off the clubs of sophomore Michael Sakane, who dropped in four birdies to shoot -3, 69, propelling himself into a tie for ninth place (-3, 141).

Junior Eduardo Carette birdied three times en-route to shooting +1, 73 to finishing in a stalemate for 32nd. Senior Sam Uhland and sophomore Aaeri Krishnan followed behind, laying down rounds of +6, 78 and +5, 77, respectively, landing Uhland in a tie for 47th and Krishnan in 82nd.

Looking to begin the year with a top-5 finish, the Dolphins will take the course for the third and final round of play on Wednesday, Sept. 17. The day tees off with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. EST, with 'Phin golfers beginning their campaigns on holes 4, 5 and 6.
