Dolphins' Defensive Effort Comes Up Just Short

Jacksonville men's soccer (0-7-0) hosted UT Rio Grande Valley (5-2-0) under the lights Tuesday. The Dolphins kept RGV within reach throughout the match, but the evening ended with a 2-0 decision in favor of the Vaqueros.

The match saw no score through the first 20 minutes with freshman keeper Matt Levy staving off six shots in that time. The seventh shot, however, got passed Levy and gave RGV a 1-0 lead. The ball had been served on a corner kick from RGV's Isidro Martinez, and William Akio connected on the box for his second goal of the season.

The 1-0 deficit was carried into the locker rooms at halftime, with freshman Reed Davis providing the 'Phins with their lone shot in the first frame.

Jacksonville attempted to garner some momentum early in the second as sophomore Nazar Deputat rattled off a shot in the 48th minute that sailed wide. The two teams traded field position with little luck over the next 20 minutes. It wasn't until the 68th minute that RGV was able to secure an insurance goal off the boot of Martinez for his second goal of the season.

Levy finished with three total saves, while Deputat led the team in shots with two. RGV's Akio led all players with four shots.

Jacksonville returns to the pitch Saturday, Sept. 22 for a home contest with conference rival Lipscomb, who they faced in last year's ASUN Championship. The match is set to begin at 7 PM and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
