MACON, Ga. – Jacksonville University men's cross country was selected eighth in the 2017 ASUN Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the league Monday afternoon.
"Preseason polls are nice. They mostly reflect how a team finished last season. The sport of cross country is unique; championship season is what matters," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Ron Grigg. "The regular season is simply preparation for the championship meets. Our goal is to be at our best in the championship season in late October. In ten weeks from now, we will see where the chips fall."
Jacksonville placed eighth at last year's ASUN Cross Country Championships. The Dolphins return five men from the 2016 roster, including seniors Jordon Garman and Drew Overmyer, along with freshman standout Alex Turnock.
Turnock was one of two Dolphins from the men's team to compete at the 2016 NCAA South Region Championship. He was also the first Dolphin across the line at last year's ASUN Championships, where he finished the 8K race in a season-best 27:28.8. Overmyer helped the Dolphins to a fourth-place team finish at last year's FSU Invitational with a season-best 8K time (35:32.8), while Garman ran a 32:35.9 at the 2016 Mountain Dew Invitational at the University of Florida.
North Florida's Nick Morken was voted the league's Preseason Runner of the Year, while Juan Gonzalez from Lipscomb earned the ASUN Facebook-Fan Voted Preseason Runner of the Year honors.
