JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville University Softball improved to 3-0 in the Jacksonville Invitational Saturday, defeating Virginia Tech 4-3 in eight innings in game one, and defeating Presbyterian 9-1 in five innings in game two.
Heather Roberts continued a dominant performance for the Dolphins (11-7) in the weekend tournament, going 2-for-6 with three RBI on the day. She has now racked up seven RBI in the Jacksonville Invitational. Madison Ragan has six RBI on a 6-for-8 effort at the plate this weekend. Makenzie Buss is close on their heels with five RBI, all earned in the Dolphins' second game Saturday afternoon.
vs. Virginia Tech
Jacksonville jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the Hokies (9-8) in the first inning. Allie McCourt led off with a bunt single and stole second before Danielle Baker walked to put runners on first and second for Roberts. McCourt scored as Roberts reached on a fielder's choice, notching her fifth RBI of the weekend. Ragan followed with a single, scoring Roberts on the play.
JU starter Seana Mora held Virginia Tech to only one run on a sacrifice fly in the third inning before the Hokies were finally able to tie the game on a solo shot by Emma Strouth in the sixth. Mora limited Virginia Tech to two runs on four hits, striking out three through six innings; but she left the game with the score tied and earned no decision.
The Hokies took the lead in the first extra frame as the runner placed on second to start the inning scored on a single by Casey Barrett.
JU responded in the bottom of the eighth. Baker led off the inning with a bunt single to the pitcher, which put runners on first and third as McCourt had been placed on second to start. Roberts added her fifth and sixth RBI of the Jacksonville Invitational with a walk-off double to right-center.
Alyssa Bilodeau (7-1) earned the win, holding the Hokies to one unearned run on one hit in two innings of work.
Powered by a first-inning grand slam by Buss, JU cruised to a 9-1 win over Presbyterian (1-15) in five innings.
Ragan and Roberts also went yard for the Dolphins Saturday.
Haley Holloway (2-1) earned the win, holding Presbyterian scoreless on one hit through three innings. The Blue Hose's Sarah Ramsbottom was tagged with the loss.
Ramsbottom opened the game by walking McCourt, who stole second. With two out, Ragan singled to put runners on first and third before Ramsbottom hit Jordan Daniels to load the bases. Hannah Roberts walked to give JU a 1-0 lead and keep the bases full for Buss.
Buss' grand slam put the Dolphins up 5-0 in the first. Presbyterian closed the lead to 5-1 in the second, but Ragan's second-inning solo shot made it a 6-1 contest.
Kamille Larrabee extended the lead to 7-1 in the third with some savvy base-running. Pinch-running for Hannah Roberts, Larrabee advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third as Buss attempted to take first on a strikeout. As Katelin Davis knocked an infield single, Larrabee held at third, but when Davis stole second, Larrabee scored on an errant throw by the catcher.
Heather Roberts led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, accounting for her seventh RBI of the weekend. Ragan followed that with a walk, which allowed Larrabee to reach on a fielder's choice. That set up an RBI double by Buss, giving JU the 9-1 lead.
The Dolphins close the Jacksonville Invitational with a 11:30 a.m. matchup with Iowa State, followed by a 2 p.m. contest with Campbell Sunday.
