JACKSOVNILLE, Fla.- The Jacksonville women's basketball team opened with a big first quarter and shot 54.2% from the floor in a commanding 90-51 victory over Edward Waters at Historic Swisher Gymnasium Tuesday.
The Dolphins had four of their starters score in double-digits and were paced by Briona Brown's season-high 21 points. Kayla Gordon tallied a double-double with 10 rebounds and was one of three Dolphins to score 14 points, joining Brandi Buie and Sherranda Reddick.
"We've been talking about building on our positives," said Head Coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin. "If we continue to build on our positives, they will become a positive habit.
"It was refreshing to see us hit shots tonight because that's something we have been struggling with. When we're shooting the ball well it helps our confidence."
The Dolphins established momentum early and shot an amazing 65.5% (19-29) in the first half to take a 46-25 lead into halftime.
While the outing counted as an exhibition for the Lady Tigers (9-1), Jacksonville advanced to 3-4 on the year and concluded a two-game winless spell. The Dolphins are at home Sunday for a 12:00 p.m. tipoff against Florida International. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
Tuesday's point performance was JU's best of the season. In its home opener, Jacksonville recorded an 88-50 victory over Thomas (Ga.) where four also scored in double figures.
Brown on her play tonight and building on this win: "I was definitely getting the looks I wanted tonight. We run and share the ball which made it easy. … Personally, I have to maintain my leadership. I have to be okay with making mistakes and work through them."
Coach McCuin on Swisher Gymnasium: "There is an electric atmosphere here and I'm excited about it. I like our chances against anyone in Swisher Gym. FIU is a great team. We'll need to play a complete game and put two halves together."
