DADE CITY, Fla. – Jacksonville University women's golf prevailed through wild weather fluctuations to finish day one of the Spring Break Shootout in second place on Monday.
"Today was a long day with a lot of different weather. It started off raining and then turned sunny, windy and cold," said Head Coach Jennifer Borocz. "We got off to a good start in the morning and made a good charge in the afternoon."
Maria Brunzell paced the Dolphins in round one, sinking her first ever hole-in-one on hole fourteen on the way to an even par 72, tied for the fourth best round of the first round. She added three other birdies in the round, which JU as a team placed fourth after he first 18.
The second round picked up, with Brunzell making three more birdies and sitting in second heading into the final round (72+74=146), four strokes off the lead. Detmer shot a 71, the 1-under-par round good for the second-best score of the second round, to climb the leader board into fifth.
Berman and Forsland are tied for 11th, after Berman drained two birdies on the back nine to shoot a 2-over 74 and Fueyo duplicated her 78 and is tied for 32nd.
"The conditions were definitely tougher in the afternoon," said Borocz. "Once again, we got production from everyone in the lineup."
JU recorded the lowest score through the first two rounds, tied for the second-best score on Par 5s, and the third lowest score on Par 3s. The team scored the most pars through the first day, and Brunzell's ace was one of only seven eagles recorded on the day.
The final round starts with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., with Fueyo starting off on hole three, Berman and Detmer going off two and Forsland and Brunzell teeing off hole one.
