WOLCOTT, Co. – Jacksonville University women's golf wrapped up the first day of the GolfWeek Conference Challenge at the Red Sky Ranch and Golf Club tied for 13th.
Hannah Berman led the way for the Dolphins, shooting a 3-over 75.
"I think the team persevered through some tough conditions," said Head Coach Jennifer Borocz. "We had a mixture of warm, cold, rain and wind, so the conditions were not easy."
Amanda Detmer and Maria Brunzell are right behind Berman, ending their first rounds 4-over 76. Paula Trejo Lerdo shot her best opening round as a Dolphin, a 79. Freshman Mawgan Vater, in her first collegiate event, shot an 82.
Jacksonville is tied with San Diego State for 13th, and sits only 10-shots back of sixth. The Dolphins made the sixth-most pars on the round, with 49. Detmer buried one of the five eagles on the day, and Berman and Brunzell were among the best on the course on Par-4s, shooting 1-over for the round.
"This is the first time all but Amanda have played the course, so hopefully they will get more comfortable the more they see the course," said Borocz.
Round two starts tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. for JU, with Vater starting the action for the Dolphins. Trejo Lerdo tees off at 12:54 p.m., Brunzell at 1:03 p.m., Detmer at 1:12 p.m. and Berman at 1:21 p.m. All five will go off hole 10.
