Dolphins Suffer Hard-Luck Loss at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team (0-3) battled through some adversity on Friday night under the lights of Rooney Field at Duquesne (1-2), ultimately taking the loss, 3-0, in its road debut.

The Dolphins battled throughout the first half, the defense remaining stout to hold off the Duquesne attack. Goalkeeper Brittany Hundley faced just three shots over the first 24 minutes of the game but in that 25th minute she used a hard tackle to take down a would-be goal scorer that drew a straight red card from the official. That booking cost her the rest of this contest and will keep her out of the next one.

Kristian Shores came on in net in relief of Hundley and quickly made a splash. She stopped the ensuing penalty kick and held the Dukes as bay for the remainder of the first half. The Dolphin goalkeepers wound up facing 13 shots in that first half while offense managed just two of their own. Fortunately for JU, the defense has been a strength early on in the 2018 season.

Duquesne went on to fire 24 shots in the game. However, sooner or later they'll start to find their way through. The Dolphins surrendered all three tallies over the first 11 minutes of the second half but clamped down from there, keeping the Dukes quiet over the final 34 minutes of the game. Shores stopped a second penalty kick in the 81st minute and ultimately made 11 saves in her Jacksonville debut, a season-high for either net-minder.

The Dolphins won't need to travel far to visit Sunday's opponent. The University of Pittsburgh is on deck and will welcome JU for a Noon kick off at Ambrose Urbanic Field. That match will air on ACC Network Extra which is available on all ESPN streaming platforms.
