JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Jacksonville University women's soccer team (1-11-1, 1-4 ASUN) hosted Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Southern Oak Stadium on Saturday night and did so opposite River City Rumble rival North Florida (6-6-1, 1-3-1 ASUN), in front of a capacity crowd but dropped a tension-filled heartbreaker, 1-0.
Fans in attendance helped the Dolphins raise nearly $1,000 for The DONNA Foundation whose mission is to provide financial assistance and support to those living with breast cancer and fund ground breaking breast cancer research. Founder Donna Deegan was in attendance and was honored at halftime.
On the field, this match was with played with all the emotion and tension you'd expect from a River City Rumble matchup. By the end of the game, four cards were issued, three of which went to JU as it battled to come from behind in this one.
North Florida got on the board early was a spectacular strike from Thais Reiss in the eighth minute. The Dolphins ultimately registered more shots but the UNF defense was up to the task of keeping those tries contested. Freshman Julianne Hutchison showed speed and ferocity throughout the contest, generating two of the best chances for the Dolphins down the stretch. Brittany Hundley made five more saves to add to her historic tally.
Saturday's match was the last at home for Jacksonville in 2018, pending an earned date at Southern Oak in the ASUN Tournament. The last three contests of the regular season will take place on the road at North Alabama (Oct. 12), Lipscomb (Oct. 14) and Liberty (Oct. 19), respectively.
