UPDATE (May 24 - 4 pm): In anticipation of potential severe weather affecting the NCAA East Prelims on Friday, May 25, all running events have been moved ahead 30 minutes. The 800m Quarterfinal will now take place at 2:15 p.m.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four Dolphins will represent Jacksonville University women's track and field at the NCAA Division I East Preliminaries, held this weekend, May 24-26 at the USF Track and Field Stadium on the campus of the University of South Florida.
The top three finishers from each heat, along with the next six quickest times, will advance to the Quarterfinals for the 100 and 800, which will be held on Friday. The 100m Quarterfinals begin at 1:45 pm, while the 800m Quarterfinals take place shortly after at 2:15 pm.
How Sweep It Is
For the second time this season, Jacksonville swept the ASUN weekly honors on May 2 as Michelle Howell was named Track Athlete of the Week and Brittany Bowald earned Field Athlete of the Week accolades.
Howell won the 800-meter run at the UNF Invite in 2:05.27; her time ranks eighth in the NCAA East Region and 17th nationally. She also helped the Dolphins win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 2:45.82. Bowald won the triple jump with a distance of 12.90 meters (42 ft., 4 in.) to move her into second all-time in the Dolphins' record book. Her distance also puts her at 20th in the East Region and 38th nationally in the event. Bowald added a runner-up finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.80 meters (19 ft., 0.5 in.).
Phillips won the triple jump with a distance of 12.60 meters (41 feet, 4.25 inches), and placed in the top 10 in the long jump and the javelin throw. The Valdosta, Ga. native currently ranks 30th in the NCAA Division I East Region and 59th nationally in the triple jump. Howell's runner-up finish in the 1,500-meter run (2:40.84) currently ranks 29th in the NCAA Division I East Region and 52nd overall nationally.
ASUN Weekly Awards
Michelle Howell earned her second consecutive ASUN Track Athlete of the Week honor on April 4 for her performance at the 2018 Pepsi Florida Relays. Howell set a new personal best, closed in on the Dolphins' program record, and finished fourth overall – second among Division I competition – in the 800-meter run. Currently, her time of 2:04.61 also ranks 14th in the nation.
The senior also ran the anchor leg of the Dolphins' 4x400-meter relay, which ran the program's quickest time since 2011 – and second quickest time in program history – in 3:39.07 to place sixth overall.
The top three finishers in each heat, plus the next three quickest times in the Quarterfinals of the 100m dash and 800m run, along with the top 12 marks in the triple jump, will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, held June 6-9 at the University of Oregon.
