DES MOINES, Iowa – Michelle Howell isn't ready for her senior season to end just yet. A two-time USTFCCCA All-American for Jacksonville University women's track and field, Howell will compete in the 800-meter run at the 2018 USA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Drake University on June 21-24.
The Royal Palm Beach, Fla. native joins an elite sisterhood of Dolphins who have competed at the nation's top meet, including five-time All-American Natasha Harvey, three-time All-American Shanique Walker, and former JU program-record holder and All-American Bienna Freeman.
Howell is also the first Dolphin to compete in the event at the USA Outdoor Championships since Freeman placed 32nd overall in 2013.
The meet serves as the qualification for Team USA in international competitions, including the 2018 North American, Central American, and Caribbean Championships held in August 10-12 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
The First Round of the 800m takes place this Thursday, June 21 at 3:20 pm EST (2:20 pm CST), with the Semifinals held the following day on Friday, June 22 at 7:50 pm EST (6:50 pm CST). The 800m Final takes place on Sunday, June 24 at 4:04 pm EST (3:04 pm CST).
The four-day meet will be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold, with select times and events broadcast on the Olympic Channel, NBCSN, and NBC. For the full broadcast schedule, visit nbcsports.com.
Road to the USA Championships
Howell raced to a new program-record and won the 800m in 2:04.01 at the HOKA NJNYTC Last Chance Meet, held last week at Columbia University. Her time was seven-hundredths of a second quicker than the previous record (2:04.08) set by Freeman in 2013.
Among her accolades this season, Howell raced to a hat trick of ASUN Conference titles in the 800, 1,500, and as a member of the 4x400 relay en route to being named the ASUN's Most Outstanding Track Performer. Following her sixth-place finish in the 800m at the NCAA East Prelims, she then earned her second career All-American honor after she placed 15th at this year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Highlighting her four-year career as a Dolphin, Howell holds the ASUN Outdoor Championships meet record in the 800, along with both the indoor and outdoor program records in the event. Among her many accomplishments, she is also a two-time USTFCCCA All-American in the 800 (once indoor in 2017, once outdoor in 2018), a 10-time ASUN Conference Champion, and a two-time Most Outstanding Track Performer at the ASUN Outdoor Championships. Howell has also helped the Dolphins to five team ASUN Conference titles - three indoor (2015, 2016, 2018) and two outdoor (2015, 2016).
