ATLANTA – After an outstanding opening weekend for the Jacksonville University women's track and field team, sophomore Savyon Toombs was named ASUN Conference Track Athlete of the Week and freshman Hayleigh Palotti earned ASUN Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league Wednesday afternoon.
"Savyon and Hayleigh both had excellent opening meets – Savyon setting a school record and Hayleigh with two victories. It is clear they took their winter break training seriously, and this is likely just the beginning of a season full of success for them," stated Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Ron Grigg.
With a time of 23.68 in the 200-meter dash, Toombs broke the Dolphins' indoor program record and placed second overall at last Saturday's UAB Vulcan Invite. A day prior, she ran the anchor leg of Jacksonville's 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth overall at the UAB Blazer Invite. The Tampa, Fla. native currently leads the ASUN and ranks 12th nationally in the 200.
Palotti brought home a pair of wins from this past weekend, first running the anchor leg of the Dolphins' winning distance medley relay (11:56.47) in last Friday's UAB Blazer Invite. The following day, the Livonia, N.Y. native won the 800-meter run in 2:13.58, besting a field of 33 runners. Palotti also leads the ASUN in the 800 by over six seconds and ranks 44th nationally, while JU's DMR team leads the ASUN and ranks ninth nationally.
Toombs, Palotti, and the rest of the Dolphins head north for their next two meets, with the Harvard Crimson Elite on Feb. 1 and the Boston University Scarlet and White on Feb. 2.
