JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville University volleyball closes out its season opening nine-game road swing this weekend when it heads to Montgomery, Ala. for the ISTAP Collegiate Cup Invitational, hosted by Alabama State. The Dolphins take on Western Carolina Friday at 5:30 pm EDT, and square off the following day with Southeastern Louisiana at 10:00 am EDT and the host Hornets at 7:00 pm EDT.

Last Time Out – UniWyo Invite

The Dolphins battled with a slew of tough opponents at last weekend's UniWyo Invite and suffered losses to No. 21 Purdue, Wyoming, and Eastern Michigan.

Five Dolphins posted double-digit kills on the weekend – Mallory Mattingly (31), Cristina Finan (24), Hannah Marchand (15), Olga Nushtayeva (15), and Amarrah Cooks (14) – while Alleah Stamatis (52) and Lauren Petersen (38) handled the majority of the Dolphins' assists. Mattingly also posted a team-high four service aces.

Defensively, Finan and Mackenzie Swan combined for over half of JU's digs with 26 and 25, respectively, while Marchand led the team at the net with nine blocks, including four solo. Nushtayeva (5 blocks) and Mattingly (4 blocks) also halted several of the opponents' attacks.

Where They Rank …

The Dolphins rank in the top five in the ASUN in several statistical categories including:

  • Assists per set (11.17) – fourth
  • Kills per set (11.96) – fourth
  • Team assists (257) – fourth
  • Team total blocks (43.0) – fourth
  • Blocks per set (1.87) – fifth
  • Hitting percentage (.161) – fifth
  • Team attacks per set (35.39) – fifth
  • Team kills (275) – fifth

Individually, Mallory Mattingly and Hannah Marchand posted numbers that rank in both the league and nationally:

  • Mattingly is currently second in the ASUN and ranks 119th in the nation with 235 total attacks.
  • She also ranks third in the league and 123rd nationally with 10.22 attacks per set.
  • Marchand ranks fifth in the league in blocks per set (0.95).

ASUN Weekly Honors

Hannah Marchand earned ASUN Freshman of the Week honors for Aug. 28 after an impressive weekend at Clemson's Big Orange Bash. The Sturgis, Mich. native opened her collegiate career with 11 kills and four blocks against Lamar en route to a .476 hitting percentages

The Series with Western Carolina

Jacksonville holds a 1-0 record all-time in the series with Western Carolina. The Dolphins and Catamounts last met in October of 1991 in Macon, Ga., where JU came away with a 3-1 victory.

Scouting the Catamounts

Western Carolina is 1-5 so far in 2017, and opened the season with a 3-0 win over Charleston Southern at the Catamount Volleyball Classic. The Catamounts recently returned from Honolulu, where they faced Hawai'i, then-No. 22 Utah, and South Dakota at the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic.

The Catamounts are currently second in the SoCon in both blocks per set (1.84) and team attacks per set (38.05).

Five different Catamounts have double-digit kills on the season, with Abigail Veit leading the team with 49 (2.58 kills per set). Veit also has a team-best seven service aces, along with 51 digs, and five blocks. Gabby Gray (39, 2.05 k/s), MaKenzie White (38, 2.24 k/s), and Katie O'Connor (36, 1.89 k/s) also have 35+ kills on the season. Gray is fourth on the team with 37 digs and fifth with eight blocks, while White is fourth with nine blocks. O'Connor leads the 'Cats and ranks fourth in the SoCon with 19 blocks, including three solo. Hannah Price (111 assists, 42 digs, 7 blocks), Alleah Keaton (24 kills, 14 blocks) Meagan Sanchez (69 digs) are also impact players.

The Series with Southeastern Louisiana

Jacksonville holds a 2-1 advantage all-time in the series with Southeastern Louisiana, as the Dolphins and Lady Lions last squared off in 2013. Jacksonville defeated SLU, 3-1, at the FAU Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla.

Scouting the Lady Lions

Southeastern Louisiana is 0-6 on the year so far, and most recently faced Toledo, VCU, and Bowling Green at the BGSU/UT Invitational.

Leading the Lady Lions with 2.06 kills per set is Savannah Alcazar (37 kills) and Chloee Holden (35 kills). Alcazar, tied with three others with a team-high six blocks, also ranks third on the team with 28 digs. Haley Baker leads Southeastern Louisiana with 105 assists, and is tied with Lexie Torres with a team-high four service aces. Torres also has a team-best 68 digs.

The Series with Alabama State

Saturday's meeting between Jacksonville and Alabama State marks the first time in program history that the teams will face each other.

Scouting the Hornets

Alabama State is 2-4 on the year, with season-opening wins over Savannah State and North Carolina A&T. The Hornets are looking to rebound from last weekend's North Harbour Marriott Invitational, where they faced Fresno State, Oregon State, and Portland.

As a team, ASU ranks in the top three in the SWAC in all statistical categories. Notably, the Hornets lead the league in hitting percentage (.162), kills per set (10.52), team assists (201), team kills (221), and team total blocks (42.0).

Individually, Briana Dorsey ranks second in the SWAC and 69th in the nation with a .394 hitting percentage. She is also fifth in the league with 0.95 blocks per set. Dorsey (47, 2.24 k/s), Ni'yesha Brown (53, 2.52 k/s), and Krysta Medearis (46, 2.19 k/s) all have over 45 kills on the year, while Brown and Dorsey also hold the top two spots on the team with seven and six service aces, respectively. Kori Kutsch has a team best 112 assists. Defensively, Brown (40), Bayle' Bennett (38), and Asha Daniels (38) have dug the majority of balls for the Hornets. Dorsey (20.0 blocks, 6 solo), Payten Clark (18.0 blocks, 4 solo), and Medearis (11.0 blocks) are all a force at the net with double-digit blocks in just six matches.
