Transitioning from a Jacksonville University student-athlete to its newly appointed Coordinator of Annual Giving, JU Athletic Director Alex Ricker-Gilbert welcomed former women’s lacrosse standout Ellyn Spangenberg to the department’s external team on Sept. 7, 2017.
In her new role, she will be responsible for creating and coordinating a plan to build the University’s, and specifically the athletic department’s base of annual donors.
Spangenberg returns to her alma mater after spending five years as the club director of LaxManiax, an elite girls’ lacrosse travel club in the state of Florida, and as head girls’ lacrosse coach at Creekside High School.
In her young, but accomplished career, she has been named the US Lacrosse Girls’ Coach of the Year for Florida-North, and has twice been asked to coach the Under Armour Underclass Girls’ South Team. She was also awarded the 2016-2017 Jeff Holt Coach of the Year Award by the St. Johns County School District.
Spangenberg captained the Dolphins’ women’s lacrosse team for four years, guiding them to two conference championships and a 2013 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
She graduated summa cum laude in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a minor in psychology. Her academic highlights include the Academic Excellence Award in 2012 for having the highest grade point average among all female athletes at JU and the Dr. James Brady Award for outstanding leadership in the classroom, on the field, and in the community.
Spangenberg and her fiancé Alex reside in Atlantic Beach with their two-year-old Brittany Spaniel Prince.
