Heartbreaker for Sand Volleyball

COCOA BEACH, Fla. – Jacksonville University sand volleyball ended competition at UCF’s Beach N Boards Fest on Saturday, March 15, finishing 0-for-3 on the day of 0-for-4 in the Fest. The Dolphins were swept 3-2 in all four matches over the weekend and fall to 1-8 overall.

Pairs Sammie Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist and Mayara Prestes and Niatha Cullen finished 2-for-3 on Saturday, while Prestes won all three of her matches.

MATCH 1: GEORGIA STATE 3, JACKSONVILLE 2

Following a 3-2 loss against UNF in their single-match on Friday, the Fins began action at 8:00 a.m. against Georgia State and ultimately lost 3-2.

The No. 1 and No. 5 seeds defeated Georgia State, while No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 all lost in straight sets.

No. 1 Strausbaugh and Nyquist swept 21-12 and 21-17, while No. 5 Prestes and Alyssa Robertson beat GSU 21-13 and 21-14.

Playing at No. 2, Kendall Courtney and Cullen fell 21-17 and 21-14, GSU’s No. 3 defeated Hannah McMahon and Lauren Homrich 21-8 and 21-6, while No. 4 Gabriela Roman and Emily Laskelle lost 21-11 in straight sets.

MATCH 2: WEBBER 3, JACKSONVILLE 2

Jacksonville’s No. 4 and No. 5 seeds defeated Webber, while No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 were beaten in two.

No. 4 Courtney and Robertson took out Webber 21-10 and 21-6, while No. 5 Prestes and Cullen recorded a 21-15 and 21-13 victory.

Nyquist and Strausbaugh, playing at No. 1, lost 21-14 and 21-18, No. 2 Laskelle and Rachel Miller fell 21-14 and 21-11, and No. 3 Jizzian Gesualdo and Roman were defeated 21-16 in consecutive sets.

MATCH 3: STETSON 3, JACKSONVILLE 2

In Jacksonville’s final match of the day against Stetson, the Dolphins suffered their fourth consecutive 3-2 heartbreaker.

No. 1 Nyquist and Strausbaugh finished 2-for-3 on the day, coming back from a 17-21 first set loss to win 21-18 and 15-11. No. 5 Prestes and Cullen also earned their second win of the day, winning 21-18 and 21-12.

No. 2 Roman and Gesualdo lost 21-16 and 21-18, No. 3 Laskelle and Shelby Barnett dropped 21-17 and 21-19, and No. 4 Courtney and Robertson lost 22-20 and 21-18.

Next, Jacksonville will travel to DeLand, Fla. March 21-22 to compete against FGCU and host Stetson.
