Volleyball Turns Back Chicago State in Five Games

CHICAGO, Ill. - Junior outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) recorded 21 kills and had nine blocks and eight digs as the Jacksonville University volleyball team fought past Chicago State, 30-17, 26-30, 28-30, 31-29, 15-5, Thursday night at the Dickens Center.
In front of her hometown fans, senior middle hitter Brooke Ahrens (Benson, Ill.) had 15 kills and 11 digs. Senior setter Kristin Withrow (St. Petersburg, Fla.) paced the Dolphin attack with 39 assists and 11 digs, and freshman libero Erin Donivan and senior outside hitter Alesha Rodriguez also had 11 digs.
JU (3-6) fought off match point at 29-28 in the fourth game and came back to take the frame, 31-29, and cruise to a 15-5 victory in the decisive fifth game. The Dolphins set a new JU five-game record with 16.5 team blocks, eclipsing the old mark of 15 set twice in 1995 and 1997.
The Dolphins continue their road trip as they compete in the Valparaiso Tournament Friday and Saturday in Valparaiso, Ind. JU faces Fairfield in the opener Friday at the Athletics-Recreation Center at 4 p.m., followed by matches Saturday against Valparaiso at 10 a.m. and Northeastern at 3 p.m.
